I am currently reading a book on dreaming – no, not a dream interpretation book, nor even lucid dreaming. This is all about answering ten important questions – and if you can answer them in the affirmative, then you can make your dream come true.
However, if you answer any of the ten in the negative, your dream isn’t passing the test. But not to worry – this can be a great thing!
Anyway, one thing I have been finding out is that a common problem exists among most dreamers: dreaming too small.
Now I bet I know what you’re thinking: how on earth can anyone dream too small? Actually, it’s easier than you think!
Here is an example:
“I want to make a lot of money”
Many things wrong with this dream:
* First, there is no specifics – how much is “a lot”? Is it $1,000? $10K? $1 Million?
* Second, when is this to occur? When you’re ready to retire? Before you marry and have your first child? In the next 3 years?
* Third, why do you want the money? Do you want to travel? Want to learn something new at college without applying for student loans? Invest in Real Estate?
Fourth and final: How will this benefit others? Will you donate to Human Aid for natural disasters, such as Haiti? Will you give to your religeous institution? Will you sponser someone else’s dream?
There are actually many other questions we could pose to this, but I think you’re getting the gist of this.
So, answering the above questions, here is a new dream:
“I want to make $100,000 in the next two years so that I may leave my job and be able to travel. I also want to donate 20% to homeless shelters and food pantries to help those in need.”
Much bigger, isn’t it? And for many, that can be enough to inspire them into action – but there is one last question I’d like to share:
Can this dream go any bigger, yet believable, to me?
Notice the “to me” portion of the question? This is very important – this question has to be answered in a very personal way for yourself – it does not matter what others think or believe, only that *you* can believe it enough to act on it!
So, can we make that dream any bigger, yet believable? I would say, YES!
“I want to make 3 times as much as I do at work in the next two months. I will work part-time during any free time I have to make this come true. Then, once I can quit without fear due to the buffer I have created, I will work the next 8 months full-time to build an online presence and make $100K, half of which I will save. The last 2 months I will spend as a missionary, traveling to places in need, donating my time, money, and any other resources I have to give. This will also allow me to travel and learn about other cultures, which has always been a dream of mine to do.”
Can you see how HUGE this dream has become? Do you feel the passion this person has for wanting this dream to become realized? Does it excite you into wanting to take action?
There you go, then! Please, re-read this and feel free to use this method to make your own huge dreams – in fact, feel free to comment below as to want your “shoot for the moon” dream is – and let’s see whose dreams do in fact come true!
